Why retired Colin called time on his drinking habits
Yorkshire Evening Post
|July 10, 2025
When Colin Myers retired, he never imagined it would lead to drinking a bottle of scotch a day - or that it would take a seizure to turn his life around.
The 73-year-old, who is from Leeds, ended up with liver problems after his alcohol intake quietly escalated behind closed doors.
But, when he eventually had to be rushed to hospital, Colin knew he had to confront the reality of his drinking habit.
"When I was younger I didn’t drink that much," he said.
"I was very athletic. Coming up to retirement, I started drinking more and more.
"Then, when I retired, the days got longer, there was really little to do and the drinking just got worse.
"I was drinking a bottle of scotch a day and sometimes I'd think, 'have I got enough to last me that day?' If I didn’t think I had, I'd go buy more.
