Hyde Park film initiative brings African stories to the silver screen

A Leeds independent cinema is planning to celebrate African life and culture through the regular screening of African films.

Cinema Africa! is a project that ensures a wide variety of African films are integrated into the cinema's schedule through the year.

According to Hyde Park Picture House's creative engagement officer, Mosa Mpetha, the project provides a “rare opportunity” for audiences to watch movies set in Africa and by African filmmakers in a cinema setting.

She said: “Quite often people are watching those films on streaming services such as YouTube and Netflix.

“What we've been missing out on is the opportunity to watch things collectively, just like you might watch any other film.”
