Heat is turned-up on women's health challenges

The climate crisis is having an impact on all our lives and its effects are showing up in every aspect of our lives, including in women's menstrual cycles.

Floods, heatwaves, and other extreme weather events are usually talked about in terms of physical health or economic damage to buildings but there's a quieter crisis unfolding for those affected by premenstrual syndrome, menopause and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder affects an estimated 1.6 percent of women and causes severe mood swings, irritability, and depression.

The UK, which is already vulnerable to heatwaves, is heating up faster than the global average.

For women with premenstrual syndrome, menopause and dysphoric disorder, heat can make symptoms far worse.
