Darker days ahead as clocks go back an hour this weekend
Yorkshire Evening Post
|October 25, 2025
Spring forward and fall back - if you were in any doubt whether the clocks will go back or forward tonight, this should clear up any misunderstandings.
-
The clocks going back by one hour at 2am tomorrow marks the start of winter in the UK, bringing darker days, an extra hour of sleep and a time zone shift from British Summer Time to Greenwich Mean Time. But why do we bother moving them in the first place? And how can it affect your health?
The move from Daylight Saving Time to Daylight Standard Time, to give it its Sunday name, shifts the sunlight from evenings to mornings.
Sunrises will start later as we build towards the darkest day of the year - the winter solstice on December 21 - meaning daily sunlight gradually decreases.
