Brexit divides the generations
Yorkshire Evening Post
|July 28, 2025
No-one born this century voted Brexit. That was true even before the Government announced it was widening the electorate to include more younger people (Millions to join the polls as voting age lowered to 16, YEP, July 18).
Of course, many older voters backed 'Remain' in 2016, perhaps driven by a desire to safeguard opportunities for children and grandchildren. Some of our most passionate and active pro-European campaigners are in the 'young at heart' age category.
But Brexit probably divides generations like no other issue. Younger voters are more pro-European; only among over-65s do you see majority support (57 per cent) for staying outside the EU (YouGov, July 8-9).
