Treacherous conditions as storm batters the West

(Plymouth City Council)

Strong winds saw large waves battering coastal areas, while heavy rainfall resulted in widespread surface water on roads and fields.

The impact of the storm was expected to continue into this morning in areas hit by flooding.

The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for rain and wind in the region yesterday, warning of flooding and flying debris.

In Devon, an amber rain warning was issued for the Dartmoor area, with torrential rain leading to some flooded roads becoming impassable.

In Cornwall, the railway line between Par and Newquay was closed due to flooding. Great Western Railway also closed the line between Swindon and Bristol Parkway due to the forecast severe weather. Network Rail advised passengers to check journey updates.
