Large turnout to enjoy views from historic viaduct

MORE than 2,000 visitors descended on a quiet corner of North Devon for the first opening of the Chelfham Viaduct in its near 130-year history.
The Historical Railways Estate (HRE), responsible for the maintaining the structure, invited people to enjoy the spectacular views from the bridge deck and take a walk along the track bed of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway.
The landmark opening of the viaduct formed part of a weekend of celebrations marking Railway 200, a joint effort between National Highways and local community led organisations commemorating the 200th anniversary of the modern railway.
It also included the official launch of the Chelfham Valley Heritage Hub, developed by The Growforward Project. This new community hub, located on the site of the former Chelfham Mill School, aims to provide a residential wellbeing retreat, a café and bistro, a heritage visitor centre, and accommodation for staff and volunteers.
