Woman was willing, rape defendant tells court

A MAN has denied raping a woman, insisting the sex the pair had was consensual.

Paul Hallisey told his trial that the woman willingly engaged in intercourse and played with a sex toy, and that at no time did she say or give any other indication that she wanted him to stop.

It is the prosecution case that the alleged victim “made it clear” to the defendant both “verbally and physically” - that she did not want sex on the night in question by repeatedly saying “No, I'm tired” and turning away from him.

Giving evidence from the witness box in Newport Crown Court yesterday, the defendant described how he and the complainant had been laying together on a bed in the early hours of the morning unable to sleep.

He said he began “tickling” the woman on the thigh to arouse her, and said she then reached for a ‘sex toy’ which she used on herself while he masturbated.
