Former Wales prop has lost confidence in governing body's plans

- STEFFAN THOMAS

FORMER Wales international Anthony Buchanan has resigned from the Welsh Rugby Union council after losing confidence in the governing body's plans.

Buchanan (pictured) is heavily respected not only within Wales but in world rugby circles having previously held a number of senior positions in Welsh rugby.

In a WRU council meeting on Monday Buchanan announced his resignation with a year left on his term having lost faith in the governing body's long-term plans.

We understand there are a significant number of clubs who are equally as unhappy about the direction of travel, with an extraordinary general meeting a possibility.

In order to call an extraordinary general meeting (EGM), under the WRU's articles 10% of member clubs would need to agree.

To remove the chair or other board member would then require a majority of those clubs to approve a vote of no confidence in that director or potentially in the board itself.

The relevant director or all directors would then immediately have to step down while it takes 75% of clubs to vote to change the articles of association.
