Owners of holiday lets in council tax dispute
Western Mail
|September 13, 2025
HOLIDAY let owners in a Welsh county are battling tax changes that could cost them a combined sum in the millions.
-
The owners of 270 self-catering holiday units in Powys are appealing against a switch from business rates to council tax.
A report discussed at a recent Powys council meeting states the county is due £8.49m in historic council tax because payments are yet to be collected from holiday units that have moved from business rates.
It adds: “The vast majority of those moving did so during 2024-25 and bills were backdated to 2023 where appropriate.”
The units’ owners are expected to pay a council tax premium of 75% on top of the normal charge.
