LIKE a slow-moving freight engine chugging along the line, rail in Wales is one of those topics that appears never-ending.

Whether it's Beeching putting a big red cross next to the names of 189 stations in Wales more than 60 years ago earmarking them for closure, or more recently the HS2 debacle; the calls for a Carmarthen to Aberystwyth line which are ignored; Theresa May ditching electrification to Swansea; Rishi Sunak promising to electrify the north Wales mainline; or Ken Skates rehashing that promise months later, it doesn't matter.
The actual nub may be different, but it comes back to the same thing - rail in Wales is historically poor, it needs improving and that is going to take serious investment.
