Leader rules out independence referendum in next five years

PLAID Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth has again ruled out an independence referendum if his party wins the Senedd election in May next year.

The Ynys Mon MS made a commitment there would be no referendum in the five-year term of a Plaid government if his party is successful.
Mr ap Iorwerth’s party is leading the polls, very closely followed by Reform UK in the run-up to next year's vote, with Labour's projected support having dropped off significantly.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4 yesterday, the Plaid leader was questioned about his views on immigration, his desire for Wales to rejoin the EU, devolution and tax.
Mr ap Iorwerth said: “This isn’t an independence election coming up in May next year, there won't be a referendum now. I have my beliefs, but my job as a leader is to bring people with us.”
