Charity invests in the farmers of the future

ADDINGTON Fund has launched a new package of support for new entrants into farming, including an investment which is hoped will have a "lasting impact" for one lucky family.

The charity's New Entrant Grant Scheme is aimed at individuals who are entering or have entered farming within the past two years whether renting land, securing a new tenancy, or starting a fresh venture.

Recognising the challenges that new entrants face, Addington Fund trustees have committed an initial £100,000 to the scheme for those aged between 18 and 40 years old - enabling them to have the "best start in their farming career".

In addition to this financial support, the trustees have purchased a small hill farm near Kendal, Cumbria as its flagship starter farm for new entrants.

Addington became aware of the farm when they were left a gift of money in the will of the late Mary Blades. Mary stated in her will that she wished her farm to be sold to a "keen and enthusiastic young farmer", and Addington stepped in when no suitable buyer could be found.
