Anger over hydro-plans for waterfall rated among 'most majestic' in Eryri

CONSERVATION campaigners have vowed to continue their fight should controversial plans for a hydroelectric scheme at a waterfall receive the go-ahead.

The proposal for Rhaeadr y Cwm - considered among Eryri's most iconic waterfalls is recommended for approval this week, but campaigners say the plans could harm the "completely unspoilt" natural beauty.

As the hydro project involves diverting up to 70% of the water in Cwm Cynfal gorge, critics argue this will diminish the "thunderous sound and appearance" of the spectacular waterfall.

The scheme near Llan Ffestiniog has long pitted conservationists against farmers and local communities.

Brothers Moi Dafydd, Elis Dafydd and Dafydd Elis put forward the proposal, arguing it would reduce carbon emissions, support farm viability and generate electricity for 700 households.

Eryri National Park Authority (ENPA) recognises the delicate nature of the site, which it describes as "one of Eryri's most majestic and, at present, completely unspoilt waterfalls".

The mist-shrouded cascade was captured by Victorian landscape artist David Cox, whose 1836 watercolour of Rhaeadr y Cwm hangs in the British Museum.

However, a report submitted to ENPA's planning and access committee highlighted that Wales' net-zero ambitions are significant and represent an overriding consideration.
