Dog walkers are being urged to help protect the visiting species at Forest England sites in Devon

Watch out for well-camouflaged nightjars – if you can spot them

THE team at Haldon Forest Park in Devon is calling on visitors to help protect ground-nesting birds, including the mysterious and nocturnal nightjar.

Rangers are inviting visitors to learn more about this summer-visit-ing species by watching a short film and joining a free guided walk.

Guided walks will run on June 11 and 26 and July 9.

Haldon Forest Park and the wider Haldon Forest area, near Exeter, are home to around 1% of the UK's breeding population of the Europe-an nightjar (Caprimulgus euro-paeus). Around 50 pairs arrive from Africa each summer, flying an impressive 3,500 miles to reach their preferred habitats, which are heath-land, young conifer plantation, and recently clear-felled forest.
