Replica sun to be star of show at new city festival

A GLOWING seven-metre-wide replica of the sun will be the centrepiece of an immersive art installation at Bristol Cathedral this October, as part of a new citywide tech and culture festival.
The illuminated sculpture, Helios, is the latest work by internationally renowned Bristol-based artist Luke Jerram and will be on display from October 6 to 8.
Installed inside the cathedral's grand gothic architecture, the artwork merges science, sound and light into an experience designed to captivate visitors of all ages.
Helios features 72dpi imagery of the sun's surface mapped onto a glowing sphere, with each centimetre representing 2,000km of the solar giant's exterior. A specially created surround soundscape by Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson accompanies the visuals, transforming the cathedral into what organisers call an "otherworldly" environment after dark.
