'Relief' as funding found for parade

THERE is great relief funding for Gloucester Day will be available this year as civic chiefs showed a rare sign of unity in pledging money for the annual celebration.
The celebration of the lifting of the Siege of Gloucester despite facing financial difficulties will receive a contribution of £3,500 from Gloucester City Council.
This comes as councillors from all parties backed an amendment from Community Independent Alastair Chambers to financially support the Gloucester Day Parade 2026 at last week's budget meeting.
The annual event dates from September 5, 1643 when the city held out against Royalist forces during the First English Civil War. It was celebrated for centuries before dying out in the 19th century.
