Man killed by boat's faulty winch

A PENSIONER three years into a sailing trip around the world died when he was caught in a rope and pulled into a winch, an investigation has found.

New Zealand national Lyall Babington, 74, suffered catastrophic injuries and ended up “tightly wound” around a winch drum. A Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) report found the winch was faulty.
Mr Babington was living on board his yacht Mollie having set off from New Zealand, and picked up crew in the ports he visited along the way, the MAIB said.
