Concerns raised at death in prison cell

CONCERNS have been raised by a report into the prison death of a 31-year-old woman.

Amy Cross, from Torquay, died three hours after arriving at HMP Eastwood Park in Gloucestershire in 2023. She had been arrested in Torquay for possessing drugs and taken to court in Exeter before being remanded in custody at the jail for adult women.
Not long after her arrival she was found unresponsive in her cell and, despite efforts by paramedics to save her, was pronounced dead in the jail.
An independent investigation has been conducted by the prison ombudsman. Amy died of chronic alcohol misuse with sudden cessation of alcohol consumption and the report has highlighted a "lack of communication" between police custody staff, escort officers and healthcare staff.
