Common land listing deadline warning
Western Daily Press
|March 16, 2026
A NATIONAL pressure group has warned of an impending deadline for applications to deregister areas of common land.
-
The Open Spaces Society says that under part one of the Commons Act 2006, applications can be made to de-register common land throughout England, apart from in seven local-authority areas where the deadline for applications has already closed.
The deadline is on March 15, 2027. After that date, it will generally be impossible to deregister common land without providing an equivalent area of replacement land in exchange.
Common land is land subject to, or formerly subject to, rights of common - to graze animals or collect wood for instance - or waste land of the manor not subject to rights. The public has the right to walk on nearly all commons, and to ride on many.
