Did I want to go? You're only 21 once and who cares how late it is when real-life rock stars are inviting you to a party?

At around about this time of year, I am always invited, online, to play a game called Whamageddon by my friend Georgina.

In a nutshell, you have to get through late November and December without hearing George Michael singing Last Christmas. It's not easy. You have to avoid all shops, all radio and generally embrace your inner Grinch to the absolute max. Even so, I was caught out last year by a high street shopping feature on the news in early December which had the jingle of bells and George crooning, "The very next day, you gave it away" in the background. Gah! I swear they did it deliberately.

However, my favourite Christmas pop song of all time, the one I actually look forward to hearing, is not Last Christmas but Fairytale of New York, by the wonderful Kirsty McColl and Shane McGowan of The Pogues. It has a special resonance for me because I actually met Shane, back in 1990 when The Pogues played at the Cornwall Coliseum.
