Farmland to get biodiversity boost as 200 acres become habitat bank
West Briton (Truro and Mid Cornwall)
|May 29, 2025
TWO hundred acres of damaged farmland is being given back to nature in a bid to boost biodiversity.
The Mawgan Habitat Bank, between the Helford River and Goonhilly Downs, has been established by consultancy The Environment Bank Ltd with the declared aim of enhancing biodiversity and strengthening ecosystem connectivity across the Cornish landscape.
A specialist off-site provider of biodiversity net gain (BNG), the company works with landowners to turn low-yielding former arable fields, pasture and heathland into restored habitats where depleted nature can recover.
Incorporated in 2006, The Environment Bank acquires land on at least a 30-year lease so its ecologists can work with landowners to manage the new habitats until they are fully established.
Jessica Allsop, its head of land for the south of England, who oversees the site, said each habitat bank was tailored to support the landscape in its particular location.
