IPC E&C highlights role of wind in the energy transition

As Vietnam seeks to secure sufficient electricity for future economic growth while advancing its net-zero commitment, wind power is increasingly expected to play a central role in the country’s energy transition.

- Nguyen Ngoc Tu, business development director of IPC E&C, shared his views with VIR’s Nguyen Thu

How do you view the outlook for wind power development in Vietnam?

Vietnam’s long-term prospects for wind power remain very strong. The country’s electricity demand is growing at one of the fastest rates in Southeast Asia, driven by industrial expansion, urbanisation, digitalisation, and rising living standards.

At the same time, Vietnam has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and is actively increasing the share of renewable energy in its power mix under the revised Power Development Plan VIII. This means Vietnam will need significant amounts of new generation capacity over the coming decades.

Vietnam needs large-scale, reliable sources of new electricity to support future growth, and wind energy is one of the few resources with the potential to be developed at that scale. The country possesses favourable wind conditions across many regions, while offshore wind in particular offers significant long-term potential thanks to Vietnam’s extensive coastline and growing electricity demand centres.

What is particularly encouraging is that wind power is increasingly being viewed not only through the lens of energy transition, but also energy security. Recent fluctuations in global fuel markets have highlighted the importance of developing domestic energy resources that can reduce dependence on imported fuels and strengthen the resilience of the power system. From that perspective, wind energy will play a much larger role in Vietnam’s future energy landscape than it does today.
