Yet it's an accurate description of "Every Brilliant Thing," by Duncan Macmillan (with Jonny Donahoe), which wraps the audience in an effervescent embrace even as it unfolds the story of a man whose klife is shadowed by his mother's profound and recurring depression.The play, directed by Jeremy Herrin and Mr. Macmillan, has been produced widely, including at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It was staged there in three consecutive seasons beginning in 2014, and that same year first came to New York, where it was filmed for HBO. Its arrival on Broadway can be credited to the presence of Daniel Radcliffe in the central role.The ever-endearing Mr. Radcliffe-a Tony winner for "Merrily We Roll Along"-is the only actor in the show receiving a paycheck, but he's not the only performer.Audience members are recruited by Mr. Radcliffe and a cadre of assistants to portray small but significant roles in the show: the unnamed central character's father, a school counselor, a professor (Broadway luminary Donna Murphy at the performance I saw; celebrities not guaranteed), his girlfriend-turned-wife. Many more participate in a more minor way. Those allergic to interactive shows can decline an invitation to share the spotlight, although I imagine many would dearly love to reminisce about the time they co-starred with Harry Potter.
