Benched Wirtz overshadowed by Grealish

- FROM JEREMY CROSS

THE game should have been over long before Florian Wirtz was asked to take part in it.

Which spoke volumes for a number of reasons.

One, Liverpool have so much attacking talent that their most expensive one could be deemed surplus to requirements.

Two, Arne Slot deserves huge praise for having the courage to leave out someone who cost his club a then record £116million recently.

And three, David Moyes never wins at Anfield, so Slot could afford to take the gamble without there being a genuine danger of it exploding in his face.

But this is the most scrutinised league in the world, when all said and done.

Which means the inquest into Slot’s decision to go without Wirtz for one of the biggest fixtures of the entire season will still be a long and loud one.

Slot himself put it down to the fact he was concerned about fixture congestion.
