Giving his verdict on the man everyone in Scotland was talking about this week, George said: “He doesn't think before he speaks.”

And he questioned: “Why would you not just stick to what you're supposed to be talking about?”

He is, of course, referring to Donald Trump.

In political circles, we talk a lot about “cut-through” - whether a scandal politicians are excited about actually interests the public.

George is 81 and, when I spoke to him, had just been playing bowls in Maidens, a tiny village close to Trump’s Turnberry golf course.

Locals are generally “meh” about Trump.

But while George's verdict was meant as a light criticism, Trump's lack of filter is the secret to his success.
