Streaming Sneaks: Low Life's 1970s South Korean Schemers and The Sandman 2 in July
The Straits Times
|July 03, 2025
The murky, colourful world of 1970s South Korea is the setting for the new crime drama Low Life.
LOW LIFE
Debuts on Disney+ on July 16
An 11-episode series based on a popular webtoon, it follows two schemers – veteran con man Gwan-seok (Ryu Seung-ryong) and his nephew Hee-dong (Yang Se-jong) – who hear a rumour that a sunken treasure ship lies off the coast. The two then embark on a race to try and find the bounty before other fortune-seekers can.
Why watch it: Directed by Kang Yun-sung (The Outlaws, 2017), this is part crime caper, part character drama. And the cast is anchored by the charismatic Ryu, one of South Korea's biggest movie stars, and known for historical epic The Admiral: Roaring Currents (2014) and action comedy Extreme Job (2019).
BALLARD
Debuts on Prime Video on July 9
This crime drama expands the universe of the acclaimed Bosch (2014 to 2021), a police procedural following veteran homicide detective Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver). It follows Detective Renee Ballard (Maggie Q) as she takes charge of the Los Angeles police department's underfunded but motivated cold-case unit.
