Pianist Beatrice Rana shines with transcendent technique

Ever since she burst onto the international scene after winning the silver medal in 2013's Van Cliburn Competition, Italian pianist Beatrice Rana has captivated audiences with her imaginative programmes and technical prowess, and the audience in Singapore finally got to witness her playing live.
If the golden top she wore was flamboyant, her playing was the exact opposite: poetic and playful, with flashes of power and drama reserved for the most deserving moments.
The programme was divided into two halves. The first part reflected the extremes of 19th-century German piano music, while the second featured the pinnacle of piano music by French composer Maurice Ravel.
Choosing to open the concert with short pieces by Felix Mendelssohn, it was as though Rana took a selection of his Songs Without Words (a standalone genre that the Mendelssohn siblings created) and two scherzos, coherently arranging them into a wordless song cycle for piano.
