Moana 2 sails to $495m debut at global box office

LOS ANGELES - Walt Disney's animated musical Moana 2 debuted with an estimated US$368 million (S$495 million) in global ticket sales through Dec 1, and combined with Wicked and Gladiator II to deliver the biggest Thanksgiving weekend in American and Canadian box-office history.

LOS ANGELES - Walt Disney's animated musical Moana 2 debuted with an estimated US$368 million (S$495 million) in global ticket sales through Dec 1, and combined with Wicked and Gladiator II to deliver the biggest Thanksgiving weekend in American and Canadian box-office history.
A sequel to the 2016 animated film, Moana 2 reunites American actress Auli'i Cravalho as the way-finding title character with demigod Maui, voiced by American actor Dwayne Johnson, on a voyage to break a curse and reunite the people of the ocean.
Initially envisioned as a series for the Disney+ streaming service, Moana 2 racked up a record US$221 million from North American ticket sales over the Thanksgiving period from Nov 27 through Dec 1. That surpassed Frozen 2's holiday haul of US$125 million in 2019.
