"Among three pines, two will fall short" is how one of these parable songs, accompanied by a steady ceremonial beat, deceptively begins.
But by the time Singaporean musician weish's vocals – a nasal notch above her usual delivery – is joined by a four-voice chorus and a drum kit, the crowd loses its bearings and is sent into a hypnotic frenzy.
Bathed in her unmistakable vocal idiolect, these ancient materials of a nomadic people are stripped of anachronism and dressed in a thoroughly contemporary sound – thumping, thrilling and tragic.
They open up an ancient well of feelings that can make the modern palette of emotions feel watered-down.
Stray Gods, part of the Singapore International Festival of Arts (Sifa), is a live concept album that will become her first solo album, with a loose theatrical arc directed by Marc Gabriel Loh.
