Six-time Olympic champion Diana Taurasi announced her retirement from the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Feb 25, closing the book on one of the most decorated careers in the game.

The league's 42-year-old all-time leading scorer brought home three championships in her 20 years with the Phoenix Mercury, who drafted her first overall after she led the University of Connecticut to three straight collegiate titles.

The move was expected for Taurasi, who will turn 43 in June.

The Mercury honoured her at the end of the 2024 WNBA season, promoting the final home game of the year with the phrase "If This Is It" and giving her a post-game ceremony, even though she had yet to officially decide to retire.

Taurasi had also said in September that she did not want to "make any emotional, rash decisions" about her future but added: "I know the end is near."
