All eyes on battle for Europe for rest of season
The Straits Times
|March 02, 2025
As Liverpool opened up a 13-point gap, capitalising on Arsenal's latest misfire, the midweek round of matches also closed out with each of the bottom three losing, there was talk the English Premier League season might already be over, bar the shouting.
Liverpool have been imperious, Arsenal far too fallible. Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton, the three teams promoted from last season's Championship, lie in the relegation spots adrift of Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have improved under Vitor Pereira and boast one of the best forwards within English football in Matheus Cunha.
Just the cups to play for now? Retaining last season's FA Cup could do wonders for Manchester United.
Newcastle United, meanwhile, hope that star striker Alexander Isak recovers in time for their League Cup final with Liverpool on March 16.
But also at stake are Champions League places, probably five of them next season, after four Serie A clubs blotted their coefficient copybook in exiting early.
