Railways to introduce snow cutters for clearing tracks in J-K under Make-in-India initiative

As the countdown begins for massive rail expansion in the Kashmir Valley, the railways is taking all measures to enable year-round connectivity in the region while considering plans to introduce snow cutters for clearing tracks under the Make-in-India initiative.
Kashmir is going through the coldest times of the year named 'Chilla-e-Kalan' or the harshest period when the thick sheets of snow stay for some time before being removed. The Chilla-e-Kalan starts from 21 December and is to last till 31 January. After 31 January, even as there are spells of snowfalls, the snow can be easily removed because of higher temperatures.
However, the Chilla-e-Kalan makes for a tough time in maintaining connectivity. Considering the background, the Indian Railways has procured three snow cutters from the United States for removal of snow from the tracks and keeping train movements on.
