Krishnagar's Jagaddhatri Pujablends craft, culture anddevotion
The Statesman
|October 29, 2025
In the heart of Krishnagar, where art and devotion have long intertwined, the arrival of Jagaddhatri Puja transforms the town into a vibrant canvas of craftsmanship and tradition.
Yet beyond the dazzling lights and divine grandeur lies a deep-rooted story of structure, style, and artistry-one that reflects Krishnagar's enduring cultural identity.
The origins of every Jagaddhatri Puja in Krishnagar begin with the kathamo puja, the sacred ritual marking the start of idol-making. This foundational structure known locally as kathamo takes three distinctive forms: Kathra, Singhasan, and Pata.
Each type not only reflects an artistic preference but also carries generations of ritual legacy and craftsmanship.
The Kathra framework, made entirely of seasoned wood such as sal or teak, is the most traditional form. Its intricate wooden construction continues to be a hallmark of the pujas at Malopara, Ukilpara, and Gola Patti. The Singhasan structure, designed like a royal throne, can be seen at Adima (Chaker Para) and Anandamoy Tala's Balkeswari Puja.
