The Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided to significantly scale up its voter verification and hearing process in West Bengal, with a plan to summon at least 100 voters per Assembly constituency every day for hearings.

- UNITED NEWS OF INDIA

The hearings will be conducted by Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) appointed by the Commission, as part of a large-scale effort to scrutinise voter data ahead of the publication of the final electoral rolls.

For this purpose, the Commission has already deployed 10 AEROs in each Assembly constituency.

With West Bengal having 294 Assembly seats, a total of 2,940 AEROs are currently in place across the state. In addition, the Commission is in the process of appointing between 1,000 and 1,500 more AEROs.

These additional officers may also be pressed into service for conducting hearings, depending on the volume of cases and the pace of verification.

Initially, the Commission had planned to hold hearings for a minimum of 50 voters per Assembly constituency each day.

However, following a review meeting held on Friday at the office of the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), the target was revised upward.
