Nearly a year after the horrifying rape and murder of a young postgraduate medical student at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, her grieving parents have issued an emotional call for justice — announcing an "apolitical" citizens' march to Kalighat, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence is located, on 9 August.

The protest, backed by prominent opposition figures including BJP's Leader of the Opposition in Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, aims to mark the first death anniversary of the 26-year-old doctor who was found dead on 9 August 2024, inside the seminar hall of her medical college — a case that shook the nation and triggered widespread outrage over the safety of women in public institutions.

Her parents, joined by members of the activist group Abhaya Mancha, said the "Kalighat Cholo Abhiyan" (March to Kalighat) is a non-partisan effort to demand justice and accountability from the West Bengal government and its health department.

"She was a government employee, educated in the state's institutions, and yet she met such a horrific end in her own workplace," the victim's father told reporters Sunday at their residence.
