Fireworks fallout: Noise and air pollution the day after

An undeniable aftermath of Diwali and Kali Puja celebrations is the noise and atmospheric pollution that burning fireworks cause. Rules and restrictions notwithstanding, the lighting of combustible items in the widespread pyrotechnics is an inevitable fallout of the festivals.
A day after the lighting and bursting came to an end, the West Bengal Pollution Control Board reported 49 cases had been initiated against persons who had exploded firecrackers beyond the permissible noise limit (125 dB beyond 100 metres) and time limit (8 pm to 10 pm on 20 October).
A PCB officer said this evening that the majority of these violations occurred yesterday evening, while two persons were apprehended today for bursting banned fireworks.
“These figures pertain to Kolkata and surrounding areas only,’ he clarified, adding that the quasi-government organisation had forwarded most of the cases to the police for further prosecution.
