Murshidabad has been rocked by violent protests over the amended Waqf Act, leading to the deaths of at least three people, widespread vandalism of homes and shops, and arson involving police vehicles.
The unrest has now spread to Malda, Nadia, and South 24-Parganas, prompting senior BJP leader and Purulia MP and member of the Parliamentary consultative committee for home affairs, Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato (photo) to write to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging the imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in the affected border districts.
In his letter, Mahato compared the plight of Hindus in these districts to the 1990 exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, alleging that the recent violence is a result of what he termed the Trinamul Congress government's "appeasement politics."
