Even though cyclone ‘Montha’ was mainly restricted to the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata and Howrah, could feel its rippling effect for the next few days.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted moderate rainfall for most of the districts of South Bengal till 31 October along with a forecast of heavy rainfall at a few isolated pockets in the region.

According to the RMC’s bulletin issued around 5.30 p.m. today, the ‘Severe Cyclonic Storm, Montha’ over west central Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 2.30 p.m. over the same region, about 70 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 150 km south-southeast of Kakinada, 250 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and 480 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).
