Villagers of Dhinkia Gram Panchayat under Erasama block have sought the intervention of President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for protection of their lives and livelihoods, alleging violation of their fundamental right to life in the ongoing land demarcation process.
Villagers of Dhinkia panchayat have depended on forest land for survival through betel cultivation, growing fruits and vegetables, rearing cattle and goats, and fishing in the sea. Nearly 90% of families in the region are landless. In 2005, the State Government had signed an agreement with POSCO to set up a large steel plant on the land.
