IT was improbable that even with the best of good fortune the M. C. C. would manage to pull the first Test Match out of the fire against an Australian lead of 604 on the two innings, but to make a record fourth innings score was a secondary triumph.

The games now stand: Australian wins 44, English 40, drawn 21. Heavy as the scoring was, 1,611 for 40 wickets, it falls well short of the record of 1753 at Adelaide in 1920, when Australia won by 119 (354 and 582 against 447 and 370).
