The Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) staged a massive protest on the street leading to the state Assembly on Tuesday, accusing the BJP government of hollowing out the Panchayati Raj system and snatching away the powers of elected representatives.
"First they stole votes, now they are stealing democracy at the grassroots," thundered senior BJD leaders, charging the BJP with brazenly stripping sarpanchs, samiti members, and chairpersons of their financial authority.
