Gill must set clear and consistent expectations: Greg Chappell

With India down 1-2, the 23 July Old Trafford Test is a key test of Gill's leadership and composure

NEW DELHI, 19 JULY Greg Chappell, the former India head coach has a piece of advice for new Test skipper Shubman Gill, urging him to be assertive and define the way he wants the team to play. Currently trailing 1-2 in the five-Test series against England, the Indian team will be desperate to square off the series, heading into the potentially series-deciding fourth Test at Old Trafford, starting 23 July.

"This is where Gill's leadership challenge becomes very real. He must start setting those expectations - clearly, proactively, and consistently. Gill must define what sort of team he wants India to be. The captain sets the tone - not just with words, but with actions, clarity of purpose, and visible standards," wrote Chappell in his column for Espncricinfo.

Chappell said whether it's during training, in the middle of a match, or in the dressing room, clear and calm communication is essential. He noted that Gill cannot rely solely on his batting to lead and must learn to speak in a manner that aligns the team, fosters belief, and builds trust.

Gill has scored three centuries against England in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. But after India lost the third Test at Lord's by 22 runs, Gill has the huge task of leading the visitors' resurgence to a series-levelling win in the fourth Test at Manchester.
