Suspended deputy police commissioner defiant after raid on his home amid corruption probe
DRAMATIC law enforcement operations rocked South Africa yesterday as authorities carried out high-profile raids against controversial businessman and President Cyril Ramaphosa's nephew, Hangwani Morgan Maumela, suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya, and Senzo Mchunu's chief of staff, Cedrick Nkabinde.
The raids unfolded at a politically sensitive moment, with Ramaphosa and Deputy President Paul Mashatile both out of the country, fueling speculation about the timing and implications of the crackdown.
In coordinated actions across Gauteng, elite units from the SAPS, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), and Crime Intelligence swooped on their homes in what appears to be a rapidly escalating crackdown on state-linked corruption.
The operations follow damning allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused Police Minister Mchunu, who is on special leave, and Sibiya of interfering in key investigations and protecting criminal networks within law enforcement and procurement systems.
