Talented teen takes national title in memory of former ref

Alfie Rushton, aged 14, won the English Schools AA track and field championships in Birmingham at the start of last month with an amazing throw of 54.40metres.

It fulfilled a promise of success he had made to his grandfather, Jim Rushton, right, just before the well-known former Football League referee from North Staffs died aged 77 in January. After collecting his medal Alfie proudly sat in the stands at the Alexander Stadium wearing his grandad's favourite hat as a tribute.

Alfie's mum Amy said: “It was quite an emotional moment for him because he was really close to his grandad. Jim was taken ill in January and was in a hospice when Alfie visited and promised him he would win the English Schools event.

“He was really supportive of Alfie and often came to his competitions.
