THE MALDIVES OFFER DREAM RELAXATION FOR FRAZZLED BRAINS, BARRY COOPER FINDS

MENTION the Maldives and most people will picture sun-soaked beaches with fine white sands and crystal-clear waters. After a few days at the spectacular Le Meridien Maldives Resort and Spa, I can confirm those views aren’t simply a screensaver.

The Maldives were everything I imagined they would be and more. It's a place that claimed a small part of my heart for its immense charm, breathtaking views and calm atmosphere.

If you've ever fancied being stuck on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, miles from anywhere and only reachable by boat or seaplane with turtles and dolphins for company, this is the place for you.

The Maldives are made up of almost 1,200 islands, with Thilamaafushi being the heavenly escape for myself and a few intrepid travellers.

The island is small and quaint - an overhit padel shot from the court overlooking the crystal clear water could find its way to the other side, while from end to end, a swift bike ride will have you at the sunrise end of this tiny little community.

Just one delivery of supplies comes in by boat each week, while the staff live on the island for a lengthy period of time. I stayed in one of Le Meridien’s luxury over-the-water villas (the kind you'll see all over social media), and views unlike any I'd ever seen before.
