Road to ruin
The Sentinel
|April 10, 2025
It doesn't take long for any of us who travel across Newcastle-under-Lyme, to quickly see that the state of our roads is simply not good enough.
Potholes have become more than a source of frustration. For many, they are a daily hazard. Residents have shared stories with me of burst tyres, cracked rims, suspension damage, and hundreds of pounds spent on repairs - all because the roads we use every day are crumbling beneath us.
Drivers are left weaving across lanes just to avoid the worst potholes on the roads.
Cyclists are forced out of the gutter and into traffic. Bus passengers are bounced around on journeys that should be smooth and simple.
This isn't just about comfort. It's about safety, cost, and pride in our community.
For too long, we have been told time and again that our roads are being looked after.
But the reality people are living withand driving over - says otherwise.
Too often, repairs are patchy, short-lived, or poorly executed. Residents report seeing one pothole filled while others nearby are ignored.
