History hunt sheds new light on B&B's past life as town workhouse
The Sentinel
|April 11, 2025
POIGNANT stories of paupers seeking shelter in the early 19th century have been rediscovered by a couple digging into the origins of the B&B they own.
Eccleshall Workhouse offered basic protections for the town's neediest inhabitants for more than two decades after it was built in 1810.
Its spartan regime was a far cry from its current incarnation as Eagle House Bed and Breakfast, which won accolades at the last two Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent Tourism Awards.
