'Drivers are to blame for city road closure'

Motorists accused of ignoring Birches Head one-way system

- Sentinel Reporter

'IRRESPONSIBLE' drivers have forced the closure of another Stoke-on-Trent road.

That's the message from community leaders and engineers at work in Birches Head where a one-way system has been repeatedly ignored.

Now a section of the busy Birches Head Road will shut from Monday.

It comes as Severn Trent continues to lay 24 miles of water pipes across city neighbourhoods, also including Smallthorne, Burslem, Sneyd Green, Northwood and Hanley.

A one-way system previously ran in Birches Head Road, with drivers able to travel from Town Road but not the other way. Meanwhile temporary lights were installed at the Fairhaven Grove junction.

Now Severn Trent says a section of Birches Head Road must shut owing to motorists putting the safety of workers and other road users at risk by flouting the one-way system.

The water giant encountered similar issues in Sneyd Green
