MARION MCMULLEN discovers how the hospital drama Angels became appointment viewing 50 years ago
-
BEFORE patients started turning up for Casualty or Holby City, there was Angels.
The gritty BBC series launched 50 years ago on September 1, 1975, and followed the fortunes of a group of student nurses working at the fictional St Angela's Hospital's. The action later switched to Heath Green Hospital, Birmingham, in the 1980s.
The cast included Fiona Fullerton, Pauline Quirke, Joanna Monro and Julie Dawn Cole and they each spent time on a real hospital ward before they began filming.
